'Sanguis' draws inspiration from the 17th-century Dutch vanitas genre and serves as a compelling reminder of life's fleeting nature and the inevitability of death. While early still life paintings used wilting flowers and hourglasses for allegorical symbolism, this photographic image re-contextualizes these elements for a contemporary audience. The skull, a universal signifier of mortality, is transformed by the addition of vibrant marigolds that symbolize life's cycles. Created in honor of two beloved family members, 'Sanguis' is part of the ongoing Onweacnan series which encompasses works of neovictoriana still life.
