Custom archival print, hand-selected and paired with a restored antique union case from the mid-1800s. Each work is unique and will not be available in the same way again; every piece is a whole art object. These frames are freestanding and are the perfect addition to any curio cabinet and art collection.
Created in the tradition of 17th memento mori, 'Monstrum' explores themes of mortality and transience. Vanitas still lifes were historically popular in Northern Europe as a means to encourage contemplation of the brevity of life and the futility of worldly pursuits. The Latin phrase "vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas" ("vanity of vanities, all is vanity") from the Book of Ecclesiastes encapsulates the philosophy behind these works. This contemporary photograph updates that powerful tradition, using the sharp clarity of modern media to explore these timeless concepts in an engaging and accessible way. 'Monstrum' is part of the ongoing Onweacnan series which encompasses works of neovictoriana still life.
